WPayPal – Wordpress Plugin
I’ve been searching for a Plugin for Wordpress that would allow me to charge people a PayPal subscription to access my Wordpress blog. (Don’t worry, I am not going to charge access to DanRiordan.Net). Anyway, I couldn’t find a suitable candidate to fill my needs so I decided to make one.
WPayPal is a WordPress plugin that allows you to make money from your WordPress site by collecting a payment from your users. When a new user creates a login on your site, they will be taken to PayPal to process their payment. When they return to your site, the next payment date will be updated based on a period that you define. After the next payment date, the user will attempt to login and they will be taken to PayPal to process their next payment.
The installation and configuration of WPayPal couldn’t be simpler. It is tested on Wordpress 2.8 and works just fine so should be compatible with future releases of Wordpress.
Current version of WPayPal is 1.0.0 rc-1
You can download WPayPal via EaglehawkDesign (subscription required – $7.99/year).
Support questions/issues can be posted on the Eaglehawk Design Forums.
Enjoy!
Bacon and Cabbage

Bacon and Cabbage
Second to Irish Stew, Bacon and Cabbage is one of Ireland’s most traditional dishes. Served with boiled potatoes and more commonly Parsley Sauce, Bacon and Cabbage is sure to fill that empty gap on any evening and is enjoyed by millions every day.
Ok, let’s get started and cook us a good old fashioned Irish Traditional dinner!
The Ingredients:
3 pounds Irish boiling bacon (shoulder or collar)
1 small head cabbage, cored and quartered
Parsley Sauce for serving
Boiled potatoes for serving
Let’s Cook It:
1. Put the bacon in a large saucepan and cover with cold water. Bring the water slowly to a boil, then cover and reduce the heat to medium-low. Simmer, skimming the water occasionally to remove the foam, for 1 1/2 hours (about 30 minutes per pound), or until the meat is tender when pierced with a fork.
2. About 20 minutes before the bacon is cooked, add the cabbage. Cook for 15 to 20 minutes, or until the cabbage is tender, but not soggy. Transfer the bacon to a serving dish, and let cool for so minutes before slicing. Drain the cabbage, reserving 1/4 cup of the cooking liquid for the Parsley Sauce or 1/2 cups for the Whole-Grain Mustard Sauce, and transfer to a serving dish.
3. To serve, slice the meat and serve it with the cabbage, potatoes, and sauce.
SERVES 4 TO 6
To make parsley sauce:
In a small saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter. Gradually stir in the flour. Cook for 1 to 2 minutes, or until blended. Slowly stir in the cooking liquid, then the milk. Bring to a boil and cook, whisking constantly, for 3 to 5 minutes, or until slightly thickened. Add the salt, pepper, and parsley and cook, whisking constantly, for 3 to minutes more, or until the sauce is smooth. Serve warm.
Central Victoria Web Services
Setting up a business in Australia is far more complicated than it is to set one up in Ireland, I can tell you that much at no cost. First, you need to be an Australian Resident. Check – Got that much. Then, you need to register for an A.B.N. (Australian Business Number) and then register for GST (General Service Tax). Whereas in Ireland, you just need an IBN (Irish Business Number), which is not difficult to get at all and only costs 20 Euro. Load of bollix but hey!
Anyway, I have my Residency and today I sign up for my ABN and GST. The result of which will be the formation and subsequent launch of CVWS (Central Victoria Web Services).
Now you are asking yourself:
What the feck is CVWS all about?
Well, CVWS will consist of a number of services for the Central Victoria region of Australia. These will include, but are not limited to:
- Custom Website Design
- DIY Web Design
- Website Hosting
- Reseller Hosting
- Domain Registration (including .com.au Extensions)
- Website Promotion
- Dedicated Servers
- Virtual Private Servers
- Copywriting
Plus more….
The Central Victoria Web Services website is currently being developed and, depending on the speed of the Aussie Tax Office, should be ready and running in a few days.

The Do-it-Yourself Website Promotion Tricks
You have your own website, now what? In order to succeed online, you will need website promotion so your site would be visible to everyone connected to the Internet. It is a common belief that all websites are searchable by search engines. It’s not as simple as it seems. Website promotion entails a lot of work.
Website promotion suggests that submitting your site to directories first is more important than submitting to search engines. These two are different in such a way that sites submitted to directories are only approved if it has high quality and useful content, whereas search engines just simply accept submissions of sites or pages. In submitting a website to the directory, make sure that you read and follow the directory’s rules and instructions. Keep in mind that the editors will be very discerning of your web content.
Submitting to search engines definitely helps in website promotion but this takes quite a while, usually around 3-6 months. There are things to consider when submitting to search engines, you must prepare your website. Also, you will need to learn SEO or search engine optimization. You may do this by optimizing your website by improving the elements of web design like loading time, browser compatibility, etc. Another is keyword optimization wherein you make use of appropriate keywords; these would greatly help in your website.
Other website promotion techniques are:
- Link popularity – wherein you let people link your site to theirs. In this way, you can generate more new visitors and at the same time improve your ranking in search engines.
- Write articles – that are useful to your website and let other people publish these like in article directories. You may also opt for email newsletters that include a link to your website. In this way, your subscribers are informed and updated on what’s going on in your website promotion.
- Post to a forum or discussion boards. Forums are greatly increasing their popularity and this is a good way to spread the word about your website promotion.
- In line with posting a forum, you may also want to use a signature file, a text that is appended at the end of your every post.
- Improve website promotion through banner ads displayed in other websites related to your content. But be sure that your ad is well-designed.
- Write a press release – this can definitely help in website promotion. You have to write an article about your website and submit it to different publications and you’ll get new visitors in no time at all!
Now you know what to do, know what you have to avoid as well. One of the common mistakes made is relying on free web hosting service. It’s harder for search engines to detect your website if it is hosted on a free host. If you mean serious business and eyeing it as long-term, then paid web hosting is the way to go. There are some companies that promise to submit your website to thousands of search engines at a very low price, do not be fooled. Majority of these directories and engines have very minimal traffic. Website promotion can be tricky but with good research, you and your business will succeed before you know it.

Is Bebo Failing?

Bebo
Some months ago I noticed the influx of Spam that I was receiving via Bebo comments and private messages where girls were inviting me to come and view them live on webcam while they passionately made love to their fingers or an expensive and large vibrator. Before you start jumping to sick conclusions, no I didn’t go to any of them.
I contacted Bebo about this and their reply was:
Thank you for the feedback. I am passing this information to our technical department who will update you shortly.
I have heard nothing since. I simply suggested they ad ReCaptcha to Private Messages and posts.
Now, as I write this, I noticed on my Bebo page, that one of my friends posted a comment telling me how good a product is while he sat by the pool. I was like WTF? So, I contacted him and his reply was
You know me well enough to know I would not be by a pool!
Now, the thing here is, do you feel that Bebo are so up their own arses that they can’t be arsed fixing such issues? Do you think, after all the Hype, Bebo is failing miserably? Are you, just like me, seriously considering deleting your Bebo account because you are sick of the bullshit?
Comment please.
HTML 5 – HyperText Markup Language Version 5
HTML 5 (HyperText Markup Language version 5) is the next major revision of the core language of the World Wide Web. This new version is said to become a game-changer in web application development. HTML 5 specifies two variants of the same language, a “classic” HTML (text/html) variant known as HTML5 and an XHTML variant known as XHTML5. This is the first time that HTML and XHTML have been developed in parallel.
The ideas behind HTML 5, originally referred to as Web Applications 1.0, were pioneered in 2004 by the Web Hypertext Application Technology Working Group (WHATWG); HTML 5 incorporates Web Forms 2.0, another WHATWG specification. The HTML 5 specification was adopted as the starting point of the work of the new HTML working group of the W3C in 2007. The working group published the First Public Working Draft of the specification on January 22, 2008. The specification is an ongoing work, and is expected to remain so for many years, although parts of HTML 5 are going to be finished and implemented in browsers before the whole specification reaches final Recommendation status. The editors are Ian Hickson of Google, Inc. and David Hyatt, Apple, Inc.
New Markup
HTML 5 provides a number of new elements and attributes that reflect typical usage on modern Web sites. Some of them are semantic replacements for common uses of generic block (<div>) and inline (<span>) elements, for example <nav> (website navigation block) and <footer>. Other elements provide new functionality through a standardized interface, such as the <audio> and <video> elements.
Some deprecated elements from HTML 4.01 have been dropped for authoring use, including purely presentational elements, such as <font> and <center>, whose effects are handled by CSS. There is also a renewed emphasis on the importance of DOM scripting in Web behavior.
The HTML5 syntax is no longer based on SGML despite its markup being very close. It has, however, been designed to be backward compatible with common parsing of older versions of HTML. It comes with a new introducing line which looks like an SGML document type declaration, <!DOCTYPE html>, and enables standards-compliant rendering in all browsers that use “DOCTYPE sniffing”.
New APIs
In addition to specifying markup, HTML 5 specifies scripting application programming interfaces (APIs). Existing Document Object Model (DOM) interfaces are extended and de facto features documented. There are also new APIs, such as:
- The canvas tag for immediate mode 2D drawing
- Timed media playback
- Offline storage database
- Document editing
- Drag-and-drop
- Cross-document messaging
- Browser history management
- MIME type and protocol handler registration
Some of the new features are part of HTML 5 mainly because there are no volunteers to split HTML 5 and maintain separate specifications of these features.
Differences from HTML4/XHTML1.x
The following is a cursory list of differences and some specific examples.
- New parsing rules oriented towards flexible parsing and compatibility
- New elements –
section, article, footer, audio, video, progress, nav, meter, time, aside, canvas, datagrid - New types of form controls – dates and times,
email,url,search - New attributes –
ping(onaandarea),charset(onmeta),async(onscript) - Global attributes (that can be applied for every element) –
id,tabindex,hidden - Deprecated elements dropped –
center,font,strike
Error Handling
An HTML5 (text/html) browser will be flexible in handling incorrect syntax, in contrast to the XHTML variant of HTML 5 (XHTML5), where such errors must not be ignored. HTML5 is designed so that old HTML 4 browsers can safely ignore new HTML 5 constructs. In contrast to HTML 4, the HTML 5 specification gives detailed rules for lexing and parsing, with the intent that different compliant browsers will produce the same result in the case of incorrect syntax.
